Dear Colleagues-

The Eigen6s solution, as presented most recently by Christoph Foerste at the GRACE
Science Team Meeting, and which people can download from the ICGEM site
http://icgem.gfz-potsdam.de/ICGEM/, is a solution to 240x240,
with annual, semiannual and secular terms to 50x50. The model - in particular
the secular terms (not just C20) are determined over the time span of the GRACE
mission. So the issue we face is how to extend the model to be valid at earlier
(or later) time periods - through to the launch of TOPEX (1992) for example or even
earlier to the early 1980's. We would want to use this model (or one like it)
for a variety of work since the combined  GRACE+GOCE+Lageos solution is obviously an improvement
over previous geopotential solutions (even determined with GRACE). However its not clear what is the best way to
apply this model  for  POD calculations related to the terrestrial reference frame
and for the calculation of long-term altimetric time series.

Dear colleagues,

I was recently informed by Jean-Michel Lemoine about
the discussions concerning the slope of C20 in
the current EIGEN-6 releases. (see mails below)

To sum up, the current value is valid for the time period 2003-2010
but on the long term this value is clearly far from reality (see attached plot).
A correction is proposed by GRGS for C20 et C20 dot

I used these new values in our DORIS data processing for Spot-2 and Topex
arcs of January 1993.
The impact on the post-fit orbit residuals is less that 10-3 mm/s for DORIS
and 10-6 m for Topex laser.
The main effect is a radial bias on the orbit differences: 0.3 mm for Topex
and 1.2 mm for Spot-2, with maximums at high latitudes.

So it should be OK for the recent altimetric mission Jasons and Envisat,
but the new C20dot must be used for Topex and early Spots missions.
