Fagard" Subject: New station at Belgrano (Antarctica) Dear Colleagues, A new DORIS station has been installed at the "General Belgrano" Argentine base in Antarctica, following a joint IDS proposal by the IAA (Instituto Antártico Argentino) and the German AWI (Alfred-Wegener Institute). At almost 78 degrees South latitude, this is the southernmost DORIS station ever installed, and Belgrano is the southernmost place where continuous geodetic data is recorded on an outcrop. In view of the significant contribution this new station should bring to the network robustness in this area, where access and therefore maintenance are difficult, it will be regarded as part of the permanent DORIS network. The DORIS equipment consists of a second generation beacon and a Starec antenna. The antenna is supported by a 2 meter high, 30 cm sided very rigid metal tower, set on a 70 cm sided concrete block built on a granite outcrop. The name of the station is "Belgrano" and its acronym in the data files is BELB. Transmissions started on February 6, 2004. The DOMES number for the antenna reference point is 66018S001. The ITRF2000 @ 1997.0 approximate coordinates for the antenna reference point, derived from the connection to the permanent GPS station BELG, are: X= 1106057.90 m Y= -763816.80 m Z= -6214233.61 m SigX = 0.03 m SigY = 0.037 m SigZ = 0.13 m The ITRF2000 velocities at this site are: VX = 0.0213 m/y VY = -0.0002 m/y VZ = -0.0317 m/y SigVX = 0.025 m/y SigVY = 0.034 m/y SigVZ = 0.112 m/y Attention to analysis centers: please note the high sigmas on these coordinates and velocities, especially on the vertical component. I would like to express my special thanks and congratulations to AWI's young geodesist Kathleen Lindner, who successfully carried out this installation during a very short stay at Belgrano, with no previous experience of installing a DORIS station besides a one day training at AWI's premises in Bremerhaven prior to her departure. Many thanks as well to Andrés F. Zakrajsek with IAA, for his efficient support before, during and after the installation.
