Fagard" Subject: Station renovation at Ny-Alesund (Spitsbergen, Norway) Dear Colleagues, The DORIS station at Ny-Alesund (Spitsbergen, Norway), initially installed in 1987 and already upgraded in 1999, has been renovated again. A new Starec antenna was installed on a two-meter high, 32 cm sided metal tower. This tower is located on the same two storey, 6 meter high concrete building which supported the former antenna. But unlike the former (guyed) tower which was bolted only to the thin (6 cm) concrete slab on top of an insulation foam layer, both covering the whole roof, the new tower is bolted on the intersection of two load-bearing walls, using 25 cm long rods so that they are anchored in the "real" concrete structure of the building. It is worth mentionning that the centering of the antenna was still excellent (within one mm with respect to the ground mark), but it was nevertheless high time this renovation was carried out: the firsts signs of corrosion were visible on the anodized aluminum plate, and if we had waited one more year we might have experienced once more an antenna tilt. A new beacon (3.0 model) has been installed, replacing the 2.0 one. Transmissions from the former Starec antenna (SPIB) stopped on August 15, and transmissions from the new station resumed on August 19. The acronym for the new reference point is SPJB. The DOMES number for the new antenna reference point is 10317S005. Its coordinates (ITRF2000, 1997.0) are: X = 1202794.629 m Y = 254163.268 m Z = 6237609.422 m (sigma: 1 cm) The ITRF2000 velocities for this site are: VX = -0.0144 m/y VY = 0.0076 m/y VZ = 0.0090 m/y Best regards, Herve Fagard -- ====================================================================== Herve FAGARD e-mail : herve.fagard@ign.fr Institut Geographique National 94165 SAINT-MANDE CEDEX PHONE : + 33 1 43 98 81 48 FRANCE FAX : + 33 1 43 98 84 50 ====================================================================== Please do not reply directly to this message, but send comments and suggestions to IDS.central.bureau@cls.fr
