Dear Colleagues,

On 23 June 2001, a major earthquake with magnitude 8.4 occurred near the coast of Peru. Aftershocks followed o= n July 7th=   with magnitude up to 7.6. The DORIS station Arequipa is located 190 km far east from the epicenter.

Analysis of DORIS data by SSALTO, the altimetry-orbitography-positioning operational processing centre clearly shows a gap in the coordinates time series. A displacement of about 30 cm is observed. It is south-west oriented.

Victor Lucano from Arequipa University, in charge of the DORIS beacon, says =93 Although there have been a lot of damages in the city of Arequip= a, the laser station that hosts the DORIS and GPS equipments hasn't suffered any. The GPS permanent station has also detected a displacement of the same order of magnitude."
